A thread in r/ValorantTradingPost last week described something traders in that community recognize immediately. Someone offered cheap coaching, $15 an hour, claimed top 200 peak, said they'd watch your perspective live and give real feedback. The catch appeared at step one: before any session, they needed the account login. "So I can load in from your side and see your crosshair placement." Four hours later the same person posted asking how to recover an account whose email had just been changed.
The Valorant coaching scam has been running in trading communities for a while, but it picks up every time the Night Market is active or a new ranked season starts. What makes it different from most other Valorant account thefts: victims rarely report it quickly. They handed over their own credentials, they feel embarrassed, and they try to recover quietly. That silence is exactly what the scammer counts on.
How the Valorant coaching scam works
The setup is fast. A scammer posts in a Discord trading server or on a Valorant trading subreddit offering below-market coaching. Real coaching on platforms like ProGuides or Gamer Sensei runs $25-60 an hour depending on rank. The scam offer is usually $10-20, with a rank claim calibrated to look appealing: top 500, former Radiant, "just trying to give back to the community."
When someone bites, the scammer explains they need your Riot account login to "observe you live from your perspective" or "pull your rank history and crosshair settings directly." Neither requires a login. Observers use in-game Observer mode; you can share a crosshair code in one command. But if you don't already know that, the explanation sounds plausible enough.
Once they have the credentials, they change the account email through Riot's support flow. This takes less time than most people expect. An account logged into from a new IP within the last hour has enough session context that the email change often clears in under 90 minutes. After that, you can still file an account recovery ticket, but Riot's support queue runs 3-10 business days. By the time a ticket resolves, the account has usually been relisted somewhere.
What legitimate Valorant coaches never ask for

Start with the price. Below $20 an hour for a Radiant or top 500 coach isn't automatically suspicious, but paired with anything else here, it's worth pausing on.
Second, credentials before the session. Real coaches schedule through a DM or platform and start when you're both online. There's nothing about booking a coaching slot that requires your Riot login.
Third: no verifiable presence anywhere. Ask for a Twitch channel, YouTube uploads, or a coaching platform profile with actual client reviews. "I've coached several people but I don't post publicly" is not a credential.

Change your password immediately. Then check whether the account email is still yours.
If it's already been changed, open an account recovery ticket with Riot support now. Don't contact the scammer again. They'll either ignore you or offer to return the account for more money. Neither is real.

Never hand over credentials before a first session. A legitimate coach closes the deal on what they can teach you. If they need your password first, the session was never the plan.
